He figured it out his freshman year in college. It was an art history class, because it counted for gen ed and David hadn't picked his major yet anyway, so he might as well.
They were going over the Italian Renaissance, talking about the early Florentine painters. One of the examples his teacher used was a mid-fourteenth-century painting, by an unknown artist, called Il Dottore.
David totally missed the lecture about why this painting wasn't famous when some of its contemporaries were, because Il Dottore looked exactly like the pictures Mom had of his father.
Exactly. Like.
Of course, he could've just been imagining things. So he went online after class, first digging up a couple pictures of David Greenberg, and finding Il Dottore. No question about it, when they were side by side. Same man.
So that was a weird coincidence. But when he searched for similar images, it got even weirder.
A portrait of a poet in French court dress of the late 18th century.
A 19th-century daguerrotype, stiff and formal.
A couple dozen pictures from various points in the 20th century.
The background of a still from news footage from the 21st century.
David lined all the pictures up in rows on his desktop, staring from one to the other, trying to make sense of them. Either his father was a clone--from centuries before the tech existed--or...
He closed them all and turned off his computer. If, as impossible as it sounded, his father had been alive at least since the 14th century...there was a good chance he was still out there. And...maybe...if he kept looking for pictures...
He could find him. And find out who--or what--he really was.
If he's a what, not a who, what does that make me...?
David took a deep breath, and turned the computer back on.
