Story: Cruel
Year: 2179
Word Count: 305
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Michaela, Gabriel, Simon (here David Greenberg)
Warnings: Planned memory-erasure and kidnapping
A simple glamour let Michaela ride on the top of his car unnoticed. It of course provided no cover from the others, but it was the humans who should remain in the dark.
"Can't you leave him here?" Gabriel asked from the top of the trunk.
"No," Michaela answered, with a faint tinge of regret.
"He's happy."
"This is known."
"You know how rare that is."
"Yes."
"Then why can't we just give him this?" Gabriel asked, joining Michaela on the roof.
The car rolled to a stop at a red light. "You know why."
"Whatever you think you need him for, it can wait a few years."
Michaela's head shook. "It's waited long enough, brother."
Gabriel ran a hand through his hair, a too-obvious sign of frustration. "Then why even place him where he'd find her, if you were just going to take him away?"
"Because," the soft reply came, "his happiness is all too rare. And he has suffered so much."
"It'll hurt worse this time," Gabriel pointed out.
There was a long moment of silence. "This is known," Michaela finally said.
"You know his wife is pregnant?" Gabriel tried.
"There can be no further delays. As soon as he is somewhere private, he will be remade."
The car started moving again, turning down a side street, and the siblings were silent until it parked at David Greenberg's house. "This is..." Gabriel sighed. "This is cruel. You do realize that?"
"He will always find her in his memories," Michalea answered, then stood up.
Next to Michaela, Gabriel vanished, off to some other part of the world with speeds only they could reach. Michaela sighed, then filed his objections away for later consideration. For now, there was work to be done, for all of them.
Michaela, eyes closed, stripped the glamour away.
"Hello, David."
