"I brought you something," Ruth said, and pulled out something wrapped in bright yellow paper.

David blinked. "What's this for?"

"Just open it," she said, smiling.

He smiled back, and carefully unwrapped it. It was a book--a new one he'd been eyeing, about a series of recent discoveries in Çatalhöyük. "Thank you," he said.

She leaned over and kissed him lightly. "Happy birthday, love."

"I...we don't know when my birthday is," he pointed out, confused.

"True," she admitted. "But...well, it's the anniversary of the first day you remember, isn't it?"

He nodded.

"So, that makes it something like a birthday."

He considered that for a minute. "I suppose it does," he said. "It's the day I became...who I am."

"Exactly." She kissed him again. "So, happy birthday to the man you are today. Whoever you might be tomorrow."

He kissed her back. "...do I get cake?"

She laughed, and swatted him playfully. "Well, it is your birthday. Let me get it."

It had five candles on it--the right number, for what they were celebrating. She even sang 'Happy Birthday.'

All in all, it was an amazing evening. He fell asleep with the book on his nightstand and the cake on his counter, hoping that this--and the rest of his 'birthdays' to come--would never be forgotten.
