It had all made perfect sense in the moment.

"I can't find where the blood is coming from," Mariko said, and she sounded frantic. "I'm not--even if I knew what the hell I was doing, I don't know what an angel's anatomy is supposed to look like, Lux, what the hell were you thinking?"

"They want to use you, against me," she said. "And I..." She was too unsure of where things stood between them, Mariko had been opaque since their reunion--and with good reason, given how Lux had been forced to harm her in the past.

And, naturally, once Mariko learned her true identity, she had become even harder to read.

But the point was, Lux had no way of knowing how willing Mariko would be to work against her. If she would do it willingly, that was one thing, but if there was any chance--any chance at all--that some traces of affection lingered, that she would have to be forced to it...

Lux was not about to depend on her siblings' uncertain mercy. Not where Mariko was concerned.

"I..." Mariko trailed off, then shook her head. "Lux, I wouldn't. I may not...I don't know what...look, I have to stop the bleeding, then we can figure the rest out."

Despite herself, Lux smiled faintly. "Then I don't regret it."

"You're bleeding. Everywhere. And I don't know how to--I'm a linguist, not a--Lux, how much blood can you lose before you..." Mariko swallowed. "Just...don't die. Okay? We'll figure out the rest, but you can't bleed to death all over me. I don't need that."

"I'm not dying, I don't think," she said. "I just--ow. All right, I think you've found where the worst of the bleeding is now."

"What do I do?"

"Hush." Lux narrowed her focus to where Mariko's hands were buried in the wound on her side, tracing with her mind the ends of her fingertips, to where--there.

Of course, she had a sibling who was much better at this, but any angel could perform a rudimentary healing, if they could find the problem. And her wound, while severe, was simple.

"Oh, God, the bleeding stopped. Lux? Lux, please don't--I told you not to--dammit."

"I'm not dead, Mariko," Lux said.

Mariko stared at her. "Don't do that again."

"I will if I have to," Lux said, carefully sitting up.

Mariko withdrew her hands. "Please, Lux. Don't.

Lux smiled at her faintly. "Thank you. For staying with me. I know how many reasons I have given you not to."

She was quiet for a moment, then leaned forward and kissed her, hesitantly. "I don't know--I don't know what I want right now," she said. "But if you're willing to...if you're willing to bleed for me, then..."

Lux kissed her back. "I am a very patient being, Mariko. When you figure it out--however you figure it out--I will be here."

Mariko nodded, and took a deep breath. She looked--vulnerable, fragile, drenched in blood like that, and even if it was Lux's, not her own...

Lux stood up with care and offered her human a hand. "Will you at least let me hide you somewhere safe, in the meantime?"

She hesitated for a moment, then nodded and took her hand.

Lux wrapped her arms around her, kissed her forehead softly, then braced herself and spread her wounded wings, taking Mariko into the sky.

It had made perfect sense in the moment, getting between her sibling and her human. And then it hadn't for a while. And now--

Well, now, it made perfect sense again.
