Story: Tiny Lights
Year: 2978
Word Count: 430
Rating: R
Characters: Lux, Mariko
Warnings: References to murder, implied interspecies sex
Lux trailed one long, slender finger down the viewscreen, showing the planet the CSP Station orbited, with all its tiny little dotted lights. An interesting perspective, this, being above a world. Lux had almost forgotten what it felt like.
Some mornings--what had been designated as 'morning' here on the Station, at least--the viewscreen was turned off after only a few seconds. Today...today was different.
Lux was almost in a perfect position to clean up the loose end that had been the entire reason for choosing this location, and would therefore soon be leaving it. There was a desire to savor the sight, the little dots scattered on the planetary surface below, one last time. It was unlikely that Lux would move today, but circumstances might force action. Before the week was out, everything would be neatly wrapped up. The creature, the representative of the species which had pursued the Opening, and his mate and spawn, they would all be destroyed. But, then again, there might be delays.
Because, of course, there was Mariko.
Lux had always had a fascination for humans, of all the sentient species in the universe. Perhaps because their design was so similar to Lux's own, merely...squashed, shorter, wider, with distressingly short shoulders. Closer, indeed, than any other species with whom Lux had made contact over the eons.
It wasn't that humans tended more towards individuality than any other species--there were others with comparable or even greater levels. It was a wild, colorful universe, particularly for beings like Lux, who were less...restricted.
But humans...humans held a special fascination. And Mariko had chosen to spend her off-hours here, with Lux. She was sleeping in the bed, Lux could hear her breathing, the smooth, sweet, steady rhythms of sated sleep, which humans were so, so good at.
Lux smiled. It would almost be a pity to tie up those loose ends. It would mean leaving Mariko behind. A shame.
But such things had to be done. The creatures had crossed boundaries that were not meant to be crossed, and, contrary to popular belief, Lux had just as much invested in those boundaries as the one who had placed them there.
Seeing the star crest over the planet's horizon, Lux knew the dots would soon be washed out, and delicately pressed the button that turned the viewscreen dark. Turning back to Mariko with a satisfied smile, Lux treasured and filed away the memory of the tiny lights, like so many stars dusting the planet’s surface.
Required vengeance or not, there were certain pleasures in crossing the boundaries.
