Mari had her degree and her dream job, and Leyla...the simple fact was, Leyla had never wanted to leave the planet, let alone go as far as the CSP Station, systems and systems away.
On the other hand, there were six years of love behind them, and it cut her to ribbons to think about giving all of that up.
Leyla thought about it. She really did.
But Leyla had dreams of her own, a life she wanted, and...
Six years or not, she knew she would never follow Mari that far away.
She didn't regret the years they'd had together, even if it had to end. Because they had been full of love, and joy, and a part of her would maybe wonder if things might have been different. Maybe they'd fallen out of love a little bit, but Leyla couldn't imagine herself living out there with Mari.
Or maybe she was just trying too hard to justify it. Relationships sometimes didn't work out, and this was...well, if there was any such thing as a good reason for a relationship to fail, this was probably it.
So Leyla drove Mari to the spaceport, and kissed her goodbye, and walked away from six years of love--grieved and disappointed, but not regretting it for a second.
