Michaela hefted the sword against the breastplate, weary and feeling its heaviness.

Words failed, studying the kneeling figure—kneeling sibling—who had been…

Who had been so beloved, and had cast it all aside.

Michaela was angry, yes, but more than angry…

Michaela was weary. Weary of the whole mess.

Their eyes met, and the kneeling one, the defeated one, began to laugh. A sick, bitter, broken laughter, and it tore at Michaela’s heart beyond comprehending, beyond words.

But Michaela forced the heart to hardness. The sword now rested against the fallen one’s shoulder, heavy with anger and sorrow and long-lost tenderness.

They had loved one another once, after all. Before all of this.

“You have transgressed.” Michaela’s voice was forced to monotone, to not betray what lurked beneath the breastplate. “You have transgressed and you must be punished.”

There was no indication that the forsaken one heard the apology Michaela was trying to make.

Michaela drew a deep breath and the sword spun with a speed that belied its weight, full of fire and just vengeance, severing that which marked what once was.

“You are unworthy,” Michaela finished, simply, and walked away, heart hardened to the faint, choking sobs coming from the erstwhile sibling.

Justice had been done.

Justice must always be done.

The weary sorrow at it covered Michaela like a cloak, as the ground swallowed the forgotten one whole.
