Rubika was probably prouder than she should be that she got to take little Imi Doren to the Fmaily island, so Papi could find a proper caretaker for her. Her father, who’d been from Simon’s line, had had an accident and died before his casual girlfriend had even found out she was pregnant. It wasn’t until Imi’s mother had died that her mother had decided she didn’t want to be the little girl’s guardian, and tracked down her paternal relatives.

As Rubika was the Family point of contact in that area, little Imi had come to her.

Not that she was in any way prepared to take care of her herself, which was why she was going back to Earth to take Imi to Papi.

Especially since Imi was small, and fragile—if Rubika had been in any position to take care of a child, it wouldn’t be one like this.

So, yes, Rubika was proud that she got to be part of a Major Change for the Family—those didn’t come around very often at all—but kind of nervous about the actual transporting-a-small-child part.

They were almost there, at least. Any minute now, Traffic Control from Earth would give her landing vectors, and then it was a short hop to the Family island. She’d wait until then to wake little Imi up, see her safely to Papi, make sure the record went in right, then continue on her route.

If nothing else, she reflected, this news would buy her a good story from Mrs. Pryce.

Definitely more proud than nervous, then. For all Imi was a pale and fragile thing and daunting to care for, even for a two-day flight, Rubika was ecstatic that she’d been the one to find her.
